The breakup of Yugoslavia and the secession of Kosovo mark a significant episode in the post-Cold War struggle between three major world-historical forces: US-led globalization, jihad, and the old nation-state system. They are the current expressions of the three civilizations that have competed for pre-eminence in the Balkan peninsula for a thousand years: the West, Islam, and the Orthodox East.
